Our entire careers have been in music. We are musicians who know and use appropriate technology, not technicians or casual fans who like twiddling dials and dabbling in music. This. Is. Our. Full. Time. Job. Our collected experience in the music industry, over 45 years combined, encompasses our work with many of the top artists, producers and engineers from yesterday and today.
We work with a wide variety of record labels, producers, artists, and engineers in all types and genres of music: Rock, Country, Americana, Bluegrass, Folk, R&B, Urban, Rap and Classical. There are no second engineers, there are no interns, and there’s no bargain night shift. If it’s mastered here, we do the work.
Independent Mastering also does audio restoration work featuring NoNOISE and CEDAR systems to preserve your tape or disc. For recordings on tape, baking is available and transfers can be made via restored vintage AMPEX 351 tape electronics. 2, 3, or 4 track tape transfers are made to your preferred media. For disc transfers, we can delicately handle transcription, lacquer or vinyl media, preserving the musicality and performance.
Eric Conn opened Independent Mastering in October 2001 after four years working for Denny Purcell, and 3 years working for Doug Sax at Sheffield Lab Recording. He holds a degree in music, and has mastered records spanning all genera of music, including artists such as Garth Brooks, Skid Row, Joan Osborne, Janis Ian, John Prine, George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Allison Moorer, JJ Cale, and many many more.
Don Cobb has more than thirty years of experience in the recording field. For fifteen of those, he was a recording and mix engineer for some of the top acts in the music industry including James Taylor, The Pointer Sisters, Quincy Jones, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Dan Fogelberg, Jimmy Buffett and Take 6. In 1987, Don was invited by the late Denny Purcell to join the staff at Georgetown Masters, where he was introduced to the ‘black art’ of mastering. Over the next fourteen years, he participated in the editing and mastering of hundreds of album projects. Since 2001, Don has had the continued pleasure of working with such artist as Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Alison Krauss and Tim O’Brien here at Independent Mastering. Don lives in Nashville with his wife, Jill, and their two sons.
